February 22 2008, 10:30 Class

Hey,

Nice job this morning, group 1.  Your peers had all positive comments about your presentation both the method and the content.  Good work!

A couple responses:

1) I don't know what all the masters programs are.  You can go on line at BGSU and search for Graduate programs and you'll find more than you ever really wanted to know.

2) If you want to get your masters here at BG, you can apply for a graduate assistantship.  You would work for the university in return for free tuition and a small living stipend.  Talk to Jeremy about this....he's doing it now.

3) As far as teaching salaries in surrounding states...I don't know off hand, and I'm sure you can google that info as well as I can.

4)  However, as far as what teachers 'make'......I have an email I'll send you on that topic.

Have a wonderful week.

Hey everyone! I just wanted to thank you all for participating during class today. As future middle school teachers we know this will not always happen. They would rather twiddle their thumbs than participate! So it was really nice for you all to show us some support and talk:)

I thought the group this morning did a really good job of getting everyone involved and it seemed like they were really organized. I really like the brochure idea. We always get SO many handouts, so this was a nice little change, but still included all the important information.

Diann, I was also wondering your personal opinion on getting your Masters right away vs. finding a job first. I know you mentioned if the job is there, take it and get the Masters later. One of my other education teachers told me that if a school district wants you badly enough, they will hire you even if you have your Masters and no experience. I still have some time to figure this out but I am always looking for input. Thanks!

Elaine,

Since you asked my opinion...I think what your other instructor said was true... the problem lies in the fact that you have to have some very special credentials for a school district to 'want you badly enough'. In today's market, schools have literally hundreds of applicants for most jobs (at least around here). Therefore, most of them are going to take the best qualified person they can find for the least money.

My opinion remains...if you can find a job you want - take it and then work on your masters. Actually, some schools will pay at least part of your tuition. If you can't find a job you want...then find yourself a graduate assistantship and get your masters for pretty much free. If you can't do that, still go ahead and get your masters...you can sub or work another job and still be striving forward.

Doing nothing or working at Walmart or McD's will not improve your resume or help you get a job in the future.

Hey everyone! Today was a very fun day! Group 1 did a great job on their presentation. I liked how they had a workheet to go with the game that kept the class involved. I also learned so much about the different schools! Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Diann,

I have a question about getting Master's in another state. I was looking at after graduation moving down south (North Carolina) to get my Master's. But I was looking at some of the school's websites and their Master's are split up differently. They are like 3-6, then 6-9. How would that work, if I got a Master's in one of those, would I then not be able to teach the other half?

Honestly, Michelle, I have no idea. I've never explored or even discussed the issue with anyone. I'm sure it would not affect what you can teach because your license is not affected by your masters unless you choose to do it in such a way as to expand your options. Even then, it only has any effect if you choose to have it do so.

I suggest you contact someone in the graduate school. If they don't know, I'm guessing they can direct you to someone who might.

Sorry I can't be more help on that issue.

Hi! Thanks for making us feel comfortable while we were presenting!! I wish everyone else the best of luck!
Diann, is it possible to get my masters in early childhood so that i would be able to eventually be certified k-9?
Thanks!!!

Hi Allison,

I'm really not certain about master's programs. If you look on blackboard, there's a list of master's programs available at BG - but there are different ones at different colleges. To get the most accurate information, I'd contact the graduate college.

Sorry I don't have this masters type info.
